Trusted Onewheel Accident Attorneys in St. George, Utah

At Swenson & Shelley, our St. George personal injury lawyers represent clients throughout Utah, including those who have been injured or lost a loved one in onewheel accidents.

A onewheel is a self-balancing electric skateboard with a single, large wheel in the center of the board. It uses gyroscopic sensors to maintain balance and provide a smooth, responsive ride. It is powered by an electric motor that provides propulsion. The motor’s power allows the rider to reach up to 25 mph, depending on the model and conditions.

Onewheel Accident

Onewheels provide a convenient mode of transportation for short commutes and errands, helping riders avoid traffic congestion and parking challenges. Onewheels are compact and portable, making them easy to carry and store at home, work, or in a vehicle.

They are popular with Utah residents and visitors. They allow riders to explore the state’s diverse landscapes while fitting in well with Utah’s active lifestyle, offering a new and exciting way to enjoy the outdoors.

Unfortunately, the more onewheels on our roadways, the more crashes, injuries, and fatalities occur from their use, including those caused by defective models that were recalled in their entirety last year. If you or someone you love were hurt or killed while riding a onewheel in Utah, contact our skilled Washington County onewheel accident attorneys today to discuss your claim.

All Models of Future Motion Onewheels Recalled Due to Accidents, Injuries & Fatalities

Last year, all models of Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards were under recall after at least four deaths and multiple injuries were reported in recent years, federal regulators said.

The 300,000 now-recalled skateboards, manufactured by California-based Future Motion, can stop balancing a rider if the boards’ limits are exceeded, which risks serious crashes, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Future Motion has received dozens of incident reports involving these skateboards, the safety commission said Friday—including four deaths between 2019 and 2021 and severe injuries like paralysis, traumatic brain injury, fractures, and ligament damage.

Regulators said people who own an impacted Onewheel skateboard should stop using it immediately. The recall affects all Onewheel electric skateboards—including Onewheel, Onewheel+, Onewheel+ XR, Onewheel Pint, Onewheel Pint X, and Onewheel GT—sold online and through independent retailers from January 2014 through September 2023.

Based on a rough estimate of sales nationwide, tens of thousands of people could be affected, and dangerous Onewheel products on the market could still hurt hundreds more.

Utah Onewheel Accidents, Injuries, and Fatalities Also Occur Because of Negligence

While defective onewheel models are leading the headlines, there are other ways people are getting hurt and killed on these motorized vehicles, even when they are functioning correctly.

Common causes of Utah accidents involving onewheels include, but are not limited to:

  • Failure to Yield: Motorists may fail to yield the right of way at intersections, causing collisions with Onewheel riders with the right of way.
  • Running Red Lights or Stop Signs: Drivers who run red lights or stop signs can collide with Onewheel riders legally crossing the intersection.
  • Turning Right: A motorist turning right may cut off a Onewheel rider traveling straight in the bike lane or on the right side of the road, leading to a collision.
  • Turning Left: Drivers making left turns may fail to notice an oncoming Onewheel rider, resulting in a crash.
  • Following Too Closely: Motorists who follow too closely behind a Onewheel rider may not have enough time to stop if the rider slows down or stops suddenly.
  • Distracted Driving: Drivers distracted by their phones or other activities may not notice a slower-moving Onewheel rider ahead, causing a rear-end collision.
  • Improper Passing: Motorists passing a Onewheel rider too closely can sideswipe the rider, causing loss of control and a potential crash.
  • Opening Car Doors: A parked car door opened into the path of a passing Onewheel rider can cause the rider to crash into the door or swerve into traffic.
  • Phone Use: Texting, calling, or using apps while driving can divert a motorist’s attention away from the road and nearby Onewheel riders.
  • Other Distractions: Eating, adjusting controls, or talking to passengers can also cause drivers to miss seeing Onewheel riders.
  • Alcohol and Drugs: Drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs have impaired judgment, slower reaction times, and decreased coordination, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Fatigue: Tired drivers may have slower reaction times and reduced awareness of their surroundings.
  • Excessive Speed: Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to react to unexpected situations and increases the severity of collisions.
  • Inadequate Stopping Distance: Higher speeds require longer stopping distances, which can be critical when encountering a slower-moving Onewheel rider.
  • Tailgating: Following behind a onewheel rider too closely can lead to rear-end collisions.
  • Road Rage: Aggressive behaviors, such as honking, cutting off, or intentionally swerving toward Onewheel riders, can cause accidents.
